Infrastructure Optimization

New technologies and terminal expansions
In addition to the new landing runway and terminal and apron expansions planned in the long-term, we are working on a number of short and medium-term projects to increase capacity at Frankfurt Airport. These include the use of new surface movement guidance control systems as well as development of existing terminal capacities.

Use of new surface movement control systems
For further improving the control and coordination of airport ground movements (taxiing traffic) Fraport AG is planning to implement the TACSYS taxi and control system which comprises two components: the Cooperative Area Precision Tracking System (CAPTS) and the Electronic Taxiway Navigation Array (ETNA). CAPTS allows for real-time location and identification of aircraft. ETNA is a navigation and guidance system for all vehicles on the apron. Both systems primarily serve to provide safe surface movement guidance. However, the systems can also help to further improve utilization of existing capacities.

Terminal capacities expanded
Over the past few years Fraport continually optimized Frankfurt Airport's infrastructure. A key element of this optimization has been capacity expansion of the passenger facilities at Terminals 1 and 2. In 2002, Pier A of Terminal 1 was extended by 510 meters and seven new aircraft positions were added to Pier D. Investment in modernization projects at Terminal 1 alone amounted to over half a billion euro in the last few years.

New Pier A0
Fraport AG is planning to build a new passenger pier that will  extend Terminal 1 farther westward by 2012.  The pier – with the working title "A0" – will expand the terminal areas used by Lufthansa and is required independently of FRA's Airport Expansion Program to accomodate the new Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8 aircraft ordered by Lufthansa.  Fraport AG will invest about half a billion euros for building construction alone.  In the final construction phase, the approximately 790-meter-long pier will comprise about 160,000 square meters and will have capacity for up to six million passengers per year.  Construction of Pier A0 is scheduled to start in third quarter 2008.

New Design of Pier B
The new design of Pier B in Terminal 1 started to be implemented in January 2008 with the remodeling of the B-star section in the west. The construction work covering approximately 75,000 square meters of old and new space will take about 3 years time. This work serves to implement the new EU security regulations effective 2009 requiring the separation of arriving and departing passengers. Furthermore, three new gate positions will be remodeled to be able to serve the new A380 aircraft generation. A further level will be added to the building thus enabling boarding of the A380 aircraft from two different levels. The new design of the Pier will feature new lounge, retail and functional areas. Passenger guidance and baggage removal from aircraft will also be optimized. Passengers will experience more security, comfort and quicker handling as result of improved service. Upon completion of the project in the summer of 2011 the completely remodeled Pier B will serve approximately 10 million passengers annually.

Expansion Hall C
The expansion of Hall C in Terminal 1 over a space of approximately 25,000 square meters creates new capacity for four million passengers annually. The departures level in the new hall features modern, open architecture with check-in counters arranged like an atrium. There are several new stores on 900 square meters. The hall is connected via a connection corridor to the new C/D connector building.

New Pier C/D
The first section of the new Pier C/D was opened in march 2008. There are four new aircraft positions. Three of these positions are equipped to handle the new A380 aircraft via three jetways at each position. The large, modern jetways are on two levels and thus enables boarding via two levels for the first time worldwide.

AIRRAIL CENTER and CargoCity South
Furthermore, plans call for construction of a multi-use service complex, dubbed AIRRAIL CENTER FRANKFURT, on top of the roof platform of the Long-distance Train Station by external investors. In addition, CargoCity South will be incrementally expanded in keeping with demand.
