Managing waste to save natural resources is a top priority for Fraport
Over the past few years, waste avoidance and conservation of natural resources proved to be the central task of a future-oriented environmental policy.
With a stringent recycling economy we ensure that materials occurring in the production and consumption of goods are kept within closed material cycles to reduce the amount of waste and use of primary raw materials.
Therefore, Fraport AG intends fully to meet the requirements and goals of the waste management law and to comply with the basic idea of the cycle economy, in cooperation with the airlines, suppliers and other airport-based companies.
Our prime goal is to avoid waste. Where it is not possible we strive to at least accomplish a reduction of the waste amount as well as prevent generation of dangerous types of waste.
Our second goal is the recovery of waste for substance recycling or for conversion of waste to energy through thermal processing. In addition to ecologically important recycling, thermal treatment is one important component of Fraport AG's waste management strategy.
After all, thermal treatment represents a form of waste management that provides for appropriate disposal which benefits both man and the environment.
Waste produced on Fraport AG's grounds is generated mainly in areas such as flight operations, handling, maintenance, as well as construction and provision of infrastructure.
All waste is separated at source according to type and composition and collected for appropriate treatment, recovery or disposal in accordance with the law.
Development of waste volumes
In 2007, approx. 24,700 metric tons of waste (without soil and construction rubble) were generated within Fraport AG's area of responsibility
in comparision to approx. 23,500 metric tons of waste the year before. About six percent of the entire amount were dangerous waste. The volume of dangerous waste fell by 22,7 percent compared to 2006.
Despite the increase in total waste tonnage, Fraport AG was able to increase the recycling rate of waste produced at Frankfurt Airport during the last twelve years from 47 percent to approx. 83 percent.
We achieved this especially by consistent implementations of our waste concept according to ecological and economical guidelines.
