We promote the integration of air, rail and road transportation

Frankfurt Airport is a pivotal point in international air transportation, a so-called hub airport. At FRA, European air service networks link into intercontinental airline networks. Over 50 percent of the airport's passengers are transfers who change planes here. The other half are departing or arriving non-transfer passengers who travel to or from FRA by public transportation or private vehicle.

For optimizing these traffic streams in terms of environmental protection Frankfurt Airport is banking on a strong intermodal concept - the intelligent integration of rail, road and air transportation systems. With our intermodal strategy we furthermore promote a migration of short-haul air travel to the rail network - which will allow for suspending a large number of short-haul flights.

With the opening of FRA's Long-distance Train Station in May 1999 and the ensuing shorter travel times, the modal split of ground traffic to and from the airport has significantly shifted away from private vehicle to public transportation. Passengers, visitors and employees of Frankfurt Airport increasingly use public transportation. To encourage increasing use of public transportation by Fraport employees, the company, in addition, provides a free "Job Ticket".

"WAYflow" research project: Improved mobility in conurbation areas

As part of a research project of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Hesse, Fraport AG, together with several partners, participates in the "WAYflow" project. The goal of the project is to develop intermodal concepts and IT services for optimizing traffic information for travelers and thus improve mobility in conurbation areas.

We promote the integration of air rail, and road transportation

Our computer-supported Transport Efficiency Support System (TESS) ensures optimum utilization of service roads, vehicles and operating times, thus reducing vehicle waiting and idling times.

When procuring new vehicles and motorized equipment for use on the Frankfurt Airport ramp we ensure that these are equipped with low-pollution engines. About 14 percent of all apron vehicles are electrically powered. Hybrid vehicles account for five percent.
