Environment Management

Environment Management

The goal of Fraport's environmental management is to protect and enhance the environment by improving environmental performance and by avoiding or reducing environmental pollution, where technically, organizationally, and economically feasible. Extensive self-monitoring within the scope of a continuous corporate eco audit program is an essential element of environmental management. The two guiding principles of our environmental management efforts are: accepting responsibility and ensuring transparency.

Accepting greater responsibility means going beyond the minimum legal compliance and voluntarily do all we can to effectively protect the environment. More transparency means disclosing the airport's environmental impacts and all associated consequence and activities to the public and actively engaging in a dialog about them.

As a member of the "Environmental Alliance of Hesse" and the "Local Agenda 21 for Frankfurt am Main", we are actively involved in promoting environmental protection in the Rhine/Main region. This also means that we participate in EMAS (the Eco Management and Audit Scheme).

Our environmental management system's goal of improving environmental performance must also be seen against this background. This system allows Fraport to implement at all levels and for all functions the company's commitment to environmental protection as formulated in its business mission. The company's environmental policy is reflected in concrete goals and measures, and it is implemented in daily business operations as well as in the products and services of Fraport AG.

Fraport AG´s Environmental Policy and Principles for the Fraport Group

The Environmental Policy Statement has been formally adopted and signed by the Board of Fraport AG.
It will be communicated to our staff and business partners.

  • In developing and operating all our business locations, Fraport AG is committed to manage all airport activities in an environmentally responsible manner. We will strive to protect and create a safe living environment at our business locations by providing our employees with healthy and safe working conditions.

  • Maintaining, developing and systematically improving our system of environmental management will support compliance with the applicable laws and regulations and lead to a continuous improvement of our environmental aspects.

  • We will undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility by training our employees and providing awareness programs to the employees on our business locations.

  • Our business will support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges respecting the principle that our environmental programs will be cost-effective, economically viable and sustainable.

  • We will encourage the development and dissemination of environmentally friendly technologies by applying environmental criteria when selecting goods and services.

  • We will provide an annual environmental report of our environmental activities making the information available to both employees and community.

  • Climate protection principles

We participate in climate protection to ensure the sustainable development of our company.

Fraport is committed to the Kyoto Protocol and aspires to limit the output of relevant greenhouse gasses to only the inevitable emissions. We are also involved in local and regional initiatives relating to climate-relevant topics within Agenda 21. On the long run, our climate protection measures are also a contribution to limiting the risks from altered weather conditions caused by climate change. We thus assure a long lasting effect on the development of our locations.

  • Biodiversity principles

Our business and the protection of natural biodiversity can be combined.

Natural and semi-natural areas and their imminent biodiversity are conserved and supported as much as possible within the realms of the operational guidelines; operational disruptions are also kept to a minimum. Similar compensations or substitutions, for which we can guarantee a long-term maintenance, are made by extensive disturbances.

EMAS
EMAS (the Eco Management and Audit Scheme) is an instrument that the European Union has created "allowing voluntary participation by organizations in the Community eco-management and audit scheme. In effect, it is equivalent to a seal of ecological quality that is awarded only when certain very strict criteria are met. EMAS requires a company not only to comply with precisely defined standards, but also continually to improve its environmental protection activities.

Environmental Alliance of Hesse
The "Environmental Alliance of Hesse" is a voluntary joint initiative by the Hesse state government and the business community in Hesse.

The initiative is designed to achieve environmental protection and conservation of resources on a high level and at the same time improve the overall conditions for economic development. The Environmental Alliance of Hesse pursues a wide range of goals, which will result in benefits for the Hessian economy as well as the administration and which will therefore benefit both the state and its citizens.

“Agenda  21“ - since 2003 “Rhine-Main Environmental Forum“
Sustainable development for the 21st century on the municipal level: Under the motto "thinking globally, acting locally" citizens prepare their local Agenda 21 in cooperation with the local  government. Under the agenda equal consideration will be given to ecological, economic and social issues in the spirit of sustainable development.  The City of Frankfurt am Main has been meeting this challenge since 1996.
