Environmental Management

The goal of Fraport’s environmental management is to protect and enhance the environment by improving environmental performance and by avoiding or reducing environmental pollution, where technically, organizationally, and economically feasible. Extensive self-monitoring within the scope of a continuous corporate eco audit program is an essential element of environmental management. The two guiding principles of our environmental management efforts are: accepting responsibility and ensuring transparency.

Accepting greater responsibility means going beyond the minimum legal compliance and voluntarily do all we can to effectively protect the environment. More transparency means disclosing the airport’s environmental impacts and all associated consequence and activities to the public and actively engaging in a dialog about them.

As a member of the “Environmental Alliance of Hesse“ and the “Local Agenda 21 for Frankfurt am Main”, we are actively involved in promoting environmental protection in the Rhine/Main region. This also means that we participate in EMAS (the Eco Management and Audit Scheme).

Our environmental management system’s goal of improving environmental performance must also be seen against this background. This system allows Fraport to implement at all levels and for all functions the company’s commitment to environmental protection as formulated in its business mission. The company’s environmental policy is reflected in concrete goals and measures, and it is implemented in daily business operations as well as in the products and services of Fraport AG.

Since 1999, Fraport AG has been participating in EMAS. In 2005, the company's environmental performance was again checked and validated by an independent environmental verifier. Furthermore, the company's environmental management system was certified to conform to ISO 14001.

Fraport AG´s Environmental Policy and Principles

Fraport AG's Executive Board has approved an environmental policy. The vision for Frankfurt Airport elevates environmental protection to a main goal. Sustainability, based on economic, ecological and social criteria is a top priority. With its  corporate vision and goal, Fraport emphasizes its commitment to its stakeholders - customers, suppliers, shareholders, employees and neighbors - by making environmental management a key issue of future corporate strategies.

In order to maintain our connection with nature, we have made a special commitment to environmental protection and environmental sustainability. We believe that environmental protection does not stop at the airport's boundaries and we go beyond what is legally required of us.

Our employees understand the importance of commitment and participate actively to achieve common goals. They are willing to assume responsibility and stand by the results of their actions. Clear and decentralized management of responsibilities allows sound decision-making. Environmental awareness is promoted among our staff at all levels. Management and employees communicate with each other in a concerted effort to improve environmental protection in all areas of the company.

Our goal is to help conserve valuable resources for future generations. This is consistent with our environmental management system. We continually strive to improve the company's environmental protection and prevent adverse impacts. Where this is not feasible, we seek solutions that cushion the impact on the environment and conserve natural resources. Whenever economically feasible, we give preference to the deployment of leading-edge and environmentally-friendly technology.

Consistent with our environmental management system, we regularly conduct audits which determine whether our business practices conform to our environmental policy and objectives. Should any discrepancies arise, remedial action can be taken. Moreover, by ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, environmental incidents and associated impacts can be prevented.

By regularly collecting essential data, we are able to monitor, analyze and assess the effects that airport operations have on the airport site and surrounding areas. This enables us to determine and evaluate the effects of new activities, new products and new procedures in advance.

We pledge to maintain an open dialog with the surrounding communities. We are very aware of our social responsibilities to maintain partnerships and open lines of communication. One example is Fraport's sponsorship of environmental projects. Furthermore, we strive to promote environmental awareness at the airport by making all pertinent data and information available to the public.

In our efforts to mitigate our company's impact on the environment, we work in close cooperation with the regulatory agencies.

We conduct all our discussions concerning the environment in an open and honest way, in tandem with local businesses and our customers. We actively encourage all companies operating at the airport to apply the same environmental standards as we do.

We participate in climate protection to ensure the sustainable development of our company.

Fraport is committed to the Kyoto Protocol and aspires to limit the output of relevant greenhouse gasses to only the inevitable emissions. We are also involved in local and regional initiatives relating to climate-relevant topics within Agenda 21. On the long run, our climate protection measures are also a contribution to limiting the risks from altered weather conditions caused by climate change. We thus assure a long lasting effect on the development of our locations.

Our business and the protection of natural biodiversity can be combined.

Natural and semi-natural areas and their imminent biodiversity are conserved and supported as much as possible within the realms of the operational guidelines; operational disruptions are also kept to a minimum. Similar compensations or substitutions, for which we can guarantee a long-term maintenance, are made by extensive disturbances.

Environmental Statement
Under EMAS we are committed to briefing the interested public regularly about significant environmental impacts of our business operations.

For the 2005 validation, Fraport again released a comprehensive environmental statement with EMAS requirements. The company is required to publish such a statement every three years. Summary reports of the statement will be provided annually to inform on the company's environmental performance.

The 2007 Abridged Environmental Statement provides a detailed list of Fraport AG's environmental activities. It also includes information about the company's noise-abatement program and the planned optimization of the aircraft noise monitoring system.

EMAS
EMAS (the Eco Management and Audit Scheme) is an instrument that the European Union has created "allowing voluntary participation by organizations in the Community eco-management and audit scheme". In effect, it is equivalent to a seal of ecological quality that is awarded only when certain very strict criteria are met. EMAS requires a company not only to comply with precisely defined standards, but also continually to improve its environmental protection activities.

Environmental Alliance of Hesse
The “Environmental Alliance of Hesse” is a voluntary joint initiative by the Hesse state government and the business community in Hesse.

The initiative is designed to achieve environmental protection and conservation of resources on a high level and at the same time improve the overall conditions for economic development. The Environmental Alliance of Hesse pursues a wide range of goals, which will result in benefits for the Hessian economy as well as the administration and which will therefore benefit both the state and its citizens.

“Agenda  21“ - since 2003 “Rhine-Main Environmental Forum“
Sustainable development for the 21st century on the municipal level: Under the motto “thinking globally, acting locally” citizens prepare their local Agenda 21 in cooperation with the local  government. Under the agenda equal consideration will be given to ecological, economic and social issues in the spirit of sustainable development. The City of Frankfurt am Main has been meeting this challenge since 1996.
