Construction of FRA's new Runway Northwest commenced on January 20, 2009. This was an encouraging signal for the future viability and competitiveness of Frankfurt Airport and provided for planning reliability for the airlines.
Inauguration of the 2,800-meter long runway will allow for parallel takeoff and landing operations and raise FRA's coordinated runway capacity from currently 83 to 126 movements per hour. This capacity increase will enable FRA to meet the growing demand from passengers and airlines. Forecasts predict that nearly 90 million passengers per year will fly into or out of FRA or make a connection here in the future.
The new Runway Northwest is scheduled to open for the 2011/2012 winter timetable.

We will do everything in our power to minimize this tremendous increase in traffic volume on people and the environment. For this purpose we have issued and by now largely implemented an expensive Ten-Point Action Program for noise protection (e.g., noise abatement program) and noise reduction (e.g., new charging system).
Furthermore, Fraport is running the
Casa Program, a voluntary program for purchasing residential properties or compensating owners of homes which will be exposed to additional noise blight when the new Runway Northwest is in operation.
