With a catchment area that extends far beyond the borders of the state of Lower Saxony, Hannover Airport serves several large states with a combined population of over 12 million. Only 17 percent of passengers come from the Hannover metropolitan area; most travel a hundred kilometers or more to get there. To accommodate this target group, the airport has ample parking with over 13,000 spaces.
Hannover Airport is also an indispensable motor for the economy for the Hannover area and the state of Lower Saxony. In fact, it often makes the crucial difference for companies looking for a place to settle. A Europe-wide study determined that the economies of airport areas are considerably stronger than the average for their respective regions. This is largely because airports themselves have significant economic potential: every euro spent at an airport multiplies in the economy as a whole with a value-generating ripple effect.
Airport operations contribute 420 million euros to the gross domestic product of Lower Saxony. The airport is one of the largest places of employment in the greater Hannover area. Nor is that all: every airport job results in 2.2 additional jobs in Germany as a whole and over 1.4 in Lower Saxony. The airport is an innovative driver of job creation.
