FRA/rap-th> Never before in Frankfurt Airport's history have so many passengers used Germany's "Gateway to the World" in a single month. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) served 5,191,760 passengers in the reporting month of July 2007 – a new absolute peak figure and an increase of 2.1 percent versus the previous monthly record of July 2006. The top monthly figure of 2006 was 5,085,258 passengers. On July 29, 2007, Frankfurt Airport, welcomed 181,464 passengers in a single day. Thus, this summer-vacation Sunday ranked third among the busiest passenger days in FRA's history. To date, July 29 has been the busiest passenger day of the current year. Interncontinental traffic proved to be the leading growth driver, with an increase of 3.4 percent. In particular Middle East destinations rose noticeably by 17.7 percent. Double-digit growth rates in traffic to and from Egypt (up 17.2 percent), the Dominican Republic (up 23.1 percent), the Maldives (up 21.3 percent) and Sri Lanka (up 24.3 percent), reflected the increasing expansion of tourism to non-European destinations. European traffic also grew slightly above average (up 2.5 percent). In July 2007, Frankfurt Airport also achieved a new monthly record in freight tonnage. With 174,345 metric tons handled in the reporting month, the previously busiest-ever July in 2006 was exceeded by 0.6 percent or 985 metric tons. The major growth factor was the more than seven percent rise in cargo tonnage on U.S. routes. FRA's airmail throughput climbed one percent to 7,425 metric tons in July. With 43,675 takeoffs and landings, the number of aircraft movements at FRA also grew by 0.2 percent in the reporting month. Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) remained nearly unchanged at 2,499,128 metric tons. In July 2007, the Fraport Group's airports (those publicized as majority holdings) topped the eight million passenger mark for the first time – recording a total of 8,188,205 passengers and year-on-year growth of six percent. Fraport's Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) and Lima Airport (LIM), in Peru, also registered new historical records in July. For the first time within a single month, the low-cost Frankfurt-Hahn airport welcomed more than 400,000 passengers. Specifically, a total of 411,400 passengers used HHN, which is located in the Hunsrück region of Germany. This represents a growth rate of 12.2 percent over the same month last year. The Peruvian capital's Lima Airport (in which Fraport has held 100 percent of the shares since the beginning of August) registered 717,576 passengers in July 2007 – also a new monthly record and a year-on-year jump of 27.4 percent. The Fraport terminal in Antalya (AYT) handled totalled 948,121 passengers in the summer month of July – an 11.9 percent rise. With 564,746 passengers, Bulgaria's Burgas Airport (BOJ) also reported a double-figure growth rate of 11.2 percent. Varna Airport (VAR), Fraport's second airport in Bulgaria, registered 355,014 passengers, nearly level with the previous year (down 0.3 percent). Cargo activity at Frankfurt, Frankfurt-Hahn, Antalya, Lima, Burgas and Varna airports together increased by 1.6 percent to 208,949 metric tons.
