44/2003

Fraport and Its AIRail Partners Are Founding Members of the Rail/Air Intermodality Facilitation Forum (RAIFF)

FRA/rap> Renowned for its efficient integration of air and rail networks at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Fraport AG is hosting two key events on intermodal travel this week. Today, the new Rail/Air Intermodality Facilitation Forum (RAIFF) - a working group of 25 European experts, including the AIRail Partners (Fraport, Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa) - held its first inaugural meeting at FRA. RAIFF will also be presented at "Air/Rail 2003 - the International Conference on Air-Rail Transportation Trends, Investment and Opportunities", which is being held on September 25 and 26 at the Steigenberger Esprix Hotel, Frankfurt Airport.

Tasked with developing concrete proposals for the European Commission by the summer of 2004, RAIFF will be examining how air and rail systems in Europe can be further integrated to best serve travelers in the future. The AIRail Partners already offer the innovative AIRail Service on two important Routes in Germany, FRA-Cologne and FRA-Stuttgart. Passengers can check in directly at the central train stations of Cologne and Stuttgart and have their baggage checked through to the final destination airport, anywhere in the world served by Lufthansa.

This is the second time that Frankfurt Airport has played host to the International Air/Rail Conference, which is organized by Oakhill Events in cooperation with the International Air Rail Organization (IARO), Deutsche Bahn, Fraport and Lufthansa. The opening address at Air/Rail 2003 will be delivered by Dr. Wilhelm Bender, Fraport AG's executive board chairman. Representatives of the European Union, the German Federal Ministry of Transportation, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will also be speaking at the conference, as well as experts from airports, airlines, railways and other organizations involved in developing intermodal solutions. At the end of the event, delegates will be able to ride the AIRail Service to Cologne and get a first-hand look at FRA's Long-distance Train Station.
