Hydrogen-powered Cars Join Fraport’s Fleet at Frankfurt Airport

Leadership in Environmental Management

20.11.2006

54/2006

FRA/rap-th> As part of a long-term test program co-financed by the European Union (EU), Fraport AG has started using two hydrogen-powered vehicles at Frankfurt Airport (FRA).  Two A-Class cars from DaimlerChrysler will undergo practical testing on and off the airport site until the end of 2009.

Fraport received the keys to its fuel-cell test vehicles last Friday at the premises of Infraserv Höchst in Frankfurt-Höchst, where the first public hydrogen refueling station in the German state of Hesse was opened earlier by Hessian state minister of economics Dr. Alois  Rhiel.  Fraport will take delivery of two more of same hydrogen cars at the end of next year.

As a member of the Environmental Alliance of Hesse and the local Agenda 21 for Frankfurt am Main, Fraport AG is  actively involved in promoting environmental protection in the surrounding Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region.  Indeed, Frankfurt Airport has been honoured by ACI Europe (Airports Council International) as "Best Airport" in recognition of outstanding performance in environmental management.

Fraport participates in the European Union's Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), whereby the  public is briefed regularly on the environmental impact of  its business operations.   EMAS is equivalent to a seal of ecological quality awarded only when strict criteria have been met.

Under EMAS, a company has to comply with precisely defined standards and to improve continually its environmental protection activities.  Fraport is required to publish an EMAS statement every three years – the latest being in 2005.  Summary reports are issued  annually to inform on the company's environmental performance.

Detailed information about Fraport's environmental commitment can be found on the Internet via www.fraport.com.   To download Fraport's latest 2005 Environmental Statement and 2006 Abridged Environmental Statement select "Environment" in the main menu, then "Environmental  Management."
