Traffic and Terminal Management

Traffic Management

In the Aviation Airside area, Fraport takes care of safe and efficient operations on the aircraft movement areas to meet its customers' needs. This includes:

  • Guidance of aircraft on the apron
  • Planning and assignment of aircraft handling positions and gates
  • Gathering and processing of all relevant scheduling, operational and status data
  • Coordination of ice and snow clearance
  • Coordination and approval of construction and maintenance work on the aircraft movement areas (e.g. runway repairs)
  • Aircraft noise monitoring
  • Monitoring of operating safety and flight operations by the local Aviation Supervision Office.

Handling aircraft taxying traffic requires close cooperation with the control tower of the German Air Traffic Control Service Deutschen Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) to coordinate air traffic during the transitions between the respective control zones and to permit rapid and effective action in the event of emergencies.

The staff is supported in its work by a large number of technical systems to ensure smooth operations. For example, the FDPS (Flight Data Processing System) supplies the staff in Central Apron Control with all the flight plan data they need. ACCS (Apron Control Communication System) secures radio connections and POGMAS (Position and Gate Management System) is used to plan and assign aircraft parking positions and gates. Areas of the apron that are difficult to see can be controlled with the help of cameras and ground radar. The employees of Apron Control receive the data on landings and aircraft towing operations via the FOGS system (Follow-Me Guidance Support).

Further innovative systems will be introduced to optimize operations still further. TACSYS/CAPTS (Taxi and Control System/Cooperative Area Precision Tracking System), an improved ground radar presentation, is currently undergoing trial operations; the DMAN (Departure Manager) to optimize departure sequences is to be implemented soon and the POGMAS system will be substituted by an enhanced RMS (Ressource Managment System).

Terminal Management

The Aviation Landside area covers the management of the terminal facilities and the passenger handling processes at Frankfurt Airport. This includes provision of orderly terminal facilities commensurate with the demand and ensuring their operating safety, functionality and cleanliness. Innovative processes and products – for example the presently most powerful and modern access control system in the world, MACS (Multi Access Control System) – and customer-oriented passenger services form the basis of competitive passenger operations at Frankfurt Airport.

A new boarding pass control procedure will be implemented at Frankfurt Airport by the end of 2008. A new bar code technology enables travelers not only to book their flights and check-in via the Internet in the future but also to print their boarding passes on a home computer. When arriving at the airport passengers holding such boarding passes can proceed directly to the flight gate when traveling with hand-luggage only. Of course, passengers will continue to be able also to check in at the counters as in the past.

Apart from management of the terminal facilities and passenger handling processes at Frankfurt Airport, Fraport AG is also active in the terminal management and operations area at further locations across the world:
