Fraport Traffic Figures: Frankfurt Airport Returns to Growth in Second Quarter of 2025

Around 5.8 million passengers travel via FRA in June 2025 – 2.9 percent increase year-on-year – First-half passenger numbers rise by 1.4 percent – Group total for June up 5.5 percent to 19.9 million passengers

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed approximately 5.8 million passengers in June 2025, an increase of 2.9 percent compared to the same month last year. This year’s June figures received an additional boost from the later timing of the Whitsun school vacation, which fell in May in 2024. Warm-weather destinations in Europe benefited from the holiday period and saw particularly strong demand during the reporting month. As a result, FRA – Germany’s largest aviation hub – recorded traffic growth for the fourth consecutive month in June.

During the period from January to June 2025, approximately 29.1 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport, representing a 1.4 percent increase on the same period last year. A breakdown by traffic regions shows that destinations in the Middle East experienced the largest decline in demand: amid heightened geopolitical tensions, passenger volumes for this region fell by 7.8 percent to 1.4 million. In contrast, passenger traffic to and from North America remained stable, with around 4.0 million travelers during the first half of the year. Meanwhile, destinations in Latin America experienced robust growth, rising by 2.8 percent to 1.2 million passengers.

After a slight decrease in the first three months of 2025, passenger numbers rebounded in the second quarter, rising by 3.1 percent year-on-year. Fraport’s CEO Dr. Stefan Schulte commented: “There is potential for this current growth momentum to be boosted even further if the German government acts rapidly to implement measures set out in the coalition agreement that would relieve some of the burdens faced by our industry. These and further steps are essential to prevent Germany’s aviation sector from falling even further behind our international peers. Here in Frankfurt, we’ve taken all the necessary steps to ensure we are well prepared for the busy summer travel season. In fact, although passenger numbers across Germany continue to lag, our key operational indicators – including punctuality – have already returned to pre-pandemic levels. This demonstrates that our measures have been effective: thanks to the introduction of modern technology at security checkpoints and bag-drop facilities, long wait times for passengers are now largely a thing of the past, even during peak hours.”

Cargo volumes in Frankfurt (including airfreight and airmail) slipped by 2.3 percent year-on-year to 174,262 metric tons in June. For the first half of 2025, cargo totaled 1.0 million metric tons, remaining unchanged year-on-year. Aircraft movements rose by 4.9 percent year-on-year to 41,423 takeoffs and landings in June (H1/2025: 219,246 aircraft movements, up 3.3 percent). Similarly, total maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) increased by 2.3 percent year-on-year to approximately 2.5 million metric tons during the reporting month (H1/2025: 13.6 million metric tons, up 2.2 percent).

Across the Group, the airports in Fraport’s international network also experienced growth in June 2025. At Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia’s capital city, traffic surged by 10.4 percent year-on-year to 163,516 passengers. With 1.1 million passengers, Fraport’s two Brazilian airports of Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), combined, recorded a significant 125.4 percent increase in traffic compared to June 2024. However, this sharp rise was primarily due to a non-recurring effect from POA’s closure last year following severe floods in the region. Elsewhere in South America, Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru saw traffic grow by 2.0 percent year-on-year to approximately 2.0 million passengers. Fraport’s 14 Greek regional airports welcomed a total of 5.3 million travelers in June, corresponding to a 1.3 percent increase year-on-year. In Bulgaria, the two coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR), operated by Fraport Twin Star, served a combined 550,005 passengers – up 14.2 percent. Traffic at Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera also increased, rising by 1.3 percent to about 5.0 million passengers.

Total passenger numbers at all airports actively managed by Fraport grew by 5.5 percent year-on-year, reaching approximately 19.9 million in June 2025.
