The new Sky Line people mover at Frankfurt Airport has resumed operating after comprehensive technical inspections and test trips. As of this morning, passengers, visitors and employees can use it again to travel between Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The causes of the problems were eliminated by making technical adjustments along the route, thoroughly checking all of the vehicles and carrying out several software updates.
Operation is resuming with initially up to eight vehicles traveling at a maximum speed of 50 kilometers an hour. Siemens Mobility, which is responsible for technical maintenance of the people mover system, worked closely with experts of Fraport AG to resolve the issues. The regular shuttle bus services between the terminals that replaced the people mover system while it was down have been halted.
“Thanks to the technical adjustments carried out by Siemens Mobility, we’re now able to ensure stable operation,” says Alexander Heinrich, operations manager for the Sky Line. “We will be very closely monitoring the system during the coming days and weeks in order to commission any required additional adjustments. Despite the measures that have been taken, it still isn’t possible to completely rule out occasional technical problems. We want to thank our passengers, visitors and employees for their patience and understanding.”
Due to required checks along the route and additional improvements that are being made to the vehicles, Siemens Mobility will continue to carry out nighttime inspections. To minimize the inconveniences this can cause for passengers and employees, until further notice Fraport will pause operation of the Sky Line every night between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. Shuttle buses will circulate between the terminals during this time.
Fraport also temporarily halted operation of the new Sky Line in late May. This was prompted by recurring technical problems whose causes hadn’t been anticipated and that only emerged during ongoing operation with increasing loads.
The new Sky Line links Fraport Airport’s three terminals with one another on a route about 5.6 kilometers long. During regular operation, the fully automated driverless system carries up to 4,000 persons an hour in each direction.
If you have questions on technical details of the new Sky Line system, please contact the press office of Siemens Mobility. Fraport’s Corporate Communications department is available to answer your questions about passenger operations.
