When people travel home for Diwali, the anticipation often begins at the airport. In the fall of 2026, Frankfurt Airport will highlight the Hindu Festival of Lights for the first time with an airport retail campaign. Aimed at passengers flying to India from Terminal 1, the campaign focuses on a specific travel moment: the last-minute purchase of gifts for friends and relatives before departure. In doing so, the campaign demonstrates how cultural understanding creates relevant retail experiences.
Growing India Travel; Gifts Are Part of the Journey
Diwali is one of the most important Hindu festivals, and this travel occasion is also highly relevant for Frankfurt Airport. In 2025, the airport recorded more than 1.2 million passengers on routes between Frankfurt and India. In addition, a large proportion of passengers residing in India purchase gifts at the airport—a clear starting point for a campaign that brings together a cultural occasion and a specific shopping situation.
From the Travel Moment to the Shopping Experience
The English-language campaign reaches travelers digitally, through partnerships with Air India and Lufthansa, as well as at select touchpoints throughout the terminal. Promotions in the security area, coupons, and special offers from retail and dining outlets create additional shopping incentives on the way to the gate, while personal shoppers offer travelers individualized assistance. An intercultural training program also prepares employees of participating retailers to meet the needs of Indian travelers.
“With the Diwali campaign, we’re placing even greater emphasis on the needs of international passengers. It is crucial to design offers, services, and communications in a way that is relevant to the specific moment of travel. For us, this means: We want to understand cultural contexts and translate them into a respectful, inspiring experience before departure,” says Dr. Babett Stapel, Senior Executive Vice President of Retail & Real Estate at Fraport AG.
Diwali Gives a New Retail Approach a Face
The campaign takes airport retail marketing beyond traditional seasonal promotions. It is not the festival itself, but its significance for travelers that determines the offerings, services, and messaging. With Diwali, Frankfurt Airport exemplifies how it embraces cultural realities and makes retail and hospitality a relevant part of the travel experience.
The Art of Retail in the Heart of Europe
As an international air traffic hub, Frankfurt Airport is a key marketplace for retail, dining, and services, offering an outstanding setting for brands and retail concepts. In the two terminals, passengers, guests, and employees will find approximately 230 retail outlets: 170 shops and service facilities, as well as 60 restaurants, bars, and cafés. In total, Frankfurt Airport offers approximately 35,000 square meters of shopping and dining space. With the vision “The Art of Retail in the Heart of Europe,” the retail management team at airport operator Fraport—led by Executive Board Member Julia Kranenberg—combines the concept of providing essential services with inspiration, creativity, and an exceptional visitor experience at one of Europe’s most important hubs. For brands, this means access to an international audience, high visibility throughout the customer journey, and the opportunity to reach people precisely when they are open to inspiration, discovery, and purchasing decisions.
