Roof securing program

Wake turbulences generated by the uplift of approaching aircraft may, at low flyover altitudes and in adverse weather conditions, loosen roof tiles. Based on supplemental planning approval decisions by HMWEVW, Fraport has developed a preventative roof securing program, the only one of its kind in the world.

The program is free of charge for owners and is a task that Fraport AG, as the airport operator, takes seriously.

Anyone who is interested can contact Fraport AG using the online contact form or by e-mailing dachsicherung@fraport.de. Experts are there to help and organize all required steps. We also offer free expert roof inspections to eligible owners upon request.

This initiative is free of charge for eligible owners, and no deadline has been set for applications. Entitlement is based on the property being located in the area set out in the attachments to the HMWEVW supplemental planning approval decisions dated May 10, 2013 and May 26, 2014.

Eligible households can decide whether they want to arrange the roof work themselves, i.e., have it carried out by a roofing company of their choice, or have it carried out entirely by experts from Fraport. There are many advantages to choosing Fraport: A team of experts will guide owners through the entire process, from submitting the application to implementation to completion. Unlike if you choose to organize the work yourself, responsibility for the roof securing lies with Fraport, which also guarantees the work is done properly.

With a total turnaround time of about three to four months from when the application is submitted, the actual roof securing work usually takes only about three weeks – depending on the weather and size and condition of the roof. The first step is to put up scaffolding, then the actual work is carried out to secure the roof, followed by the final inspection and dismantling. Fraport also upgrades, replaces or installs snow guards free of charge on request.

It is also possible to have your roof secured as part of renovation work, which can help leverage synergies. Some work that is also carried out as part of a renovation can be done free or charge or reimbursed.

Please note that only work performed as part of the actual roof securing will be reimbursed. Costs for work other than the roof securing are not eligible for reimbursement and are payable by the owners.

Even if including the roof securing in planned renovation work would have financial advantages for the owner, owners within the eligible zone should not wait too long to start roof securing work so as to avoid the risk of damage.

In January 2019, Fraport expanded its roof securing program launched in 201. The airport operator now offers an inspection program for secured roofs. Fraport also covers the costs of this.

This inspection primarily involves checking the roof securing work. It aims to reduce the negative impact on owners and make the roof securing program even more attractive.

Fraport automatically offers this additional service to all owners whose roofs have been secured by Fraport. Eligible owners do not need to register their interest with Fraport.

Roof safety hooks installed as part of the roof securing work allow workers to access the roof during and after the work, for example to carry out maintenance.

Once the work is finished, Fraport AG provides the owner with all documents they need to continue meeting their obligations as owner of the property.

Information on inspection and maintenance intervals for roof safety hooks is available from the Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV) (Umbrella Organization of the German Accident Insurance Institutions), the Zentralverband des Deutschen Dachdeckerhandwerks (ZVDH) (German Central Association of the Roofing Trade), in the manufacturer specifications or from a specialist company, e.g. a roofing company.

This program was developed following repeated incidents of damage to roofs in the towns of  Flörsheim and Raunheim where wake turbulences could not be ruled out as the cause of the damage. This prompted the HMWEVW to issue the supplemental planning approval decisions dated May 10, 2013 and May 26, 2014, on the basis of which Fraport is now voluntarily and indefinitely implementing the program.

Damage claim

If wake turbulences have caused damage, it is important to inform Fraport AG as soon as possible and provide detailed information on the damage and, in particular, the time of the damage. Experts from Fraport AG will then visit the property to identify the cause of the damage and any damage caused by wake turbulences.
