Fraport Traffic Figures – April 2026: Passenger and Cargo Traffic at Frankfurt Airport Impacted by Six Days of Strike Action

Passenger numbers at FRA drop noticeably to 4.8 million – Total volume across Fraport Group airports reaches 12.2 million passengers

Some 4.8 million passengers traveled via Frankfurt Airport (FRA) in April 2026, an 11.0 percent decrease compared to the same month last year. The decline was primarily attributable to strikes at Lufthansa, called by the pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit, and the UFO union that represents cabin staff. The strikes took place over a total of six days, affecting approximately 500,000 passengers.

Cargo volumes (comprising both airfreight and airmail) were also impacted by the strikes at Lufthansa Cargo and the reduced capacity for belly freight on passenger aircraft, dropping by 0.6 percent year-on-year to 168,526 metric tons in April. Aircraft movements declined by 11.6 percent to a total of 34,623 takeoffs and landings. Meanwhile, accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) contracted by 10.2 percent year-on-year to around 2.2 million metric tons.

In Fraport’s international portfolio, only select airports experienced significant growth. One contributing factor was the different timing of the Easter holiday travel period, which last year fell entirely in April. At Ljubljana Airport (LJU) in Slovenia, passenger numbers soared by 14.5 percent year-on-year to 143,799 travelers in the reporting month. Fraport’s two Brazilian airports, Fortaleza (FOR) and Porto Alegre (POA), recorded a combined 1.1 million passengers – an increase of 5.0 percent. Elsewhere in South America, however, Peru’s Lima Airport saw traffic decrease by 3.5 percent to approximately 2.0 million passengers in April. The 14 Greek airports welcomed a total of 1.8 million passengers, representing growth of 3.2 percent. In Bulgaria, the two coastal airports of Burgas (BOJ) and Varna (VAR) served 117,574 passengers overall, down 8.2 percent year-on-year. Antalya Airport (AYT) on the Turkish Riviera recorded a decline of 10.3 percent year-on-year to 2.3 million passengers.

The total number of passengers at all airports actively managed by Fraport fell by 6.2 percent year-on-year to approximately 12.2 million in April 2026.
